The Rowayton Arts Center presented awards for paintings by some of Fairfield County’s finest artists during the March 4 reception for its “Brushwork” exhibition. The winners by category are: Acrylic – 1st Carol C. Young (Fairfield), 2nd Susan Frey (Stamford), 3rd Lisa Thoren (Darien); Oil – 1st Betty Ball (Rowayton), 2nd Sean Murtha (Norwalk), 3rd Susan Brady (Norwalk); Watercolor – 1st Susan Spivack (Westport), 2nd Stan Pastore (Norwalk), 3rd Merion Frolich (Norwalk). 

The 24th annual Walter Brooks Memorial Award for the Watercolor 1st place winner was presented to Spivack for her watercolor painting, “Repose.” Walter Brooks, who died in 1987, was a commercial artist and graphic designer. He is best known for a series of books on painting techniques and designs for at least a half dozen United States postage stamps. Brooks was president of the Society of Illustrators and a member of the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylics. He and his wife, Lois, became members of the Rowayton Arts Center in the early 1960s and also established the Fairfield Watercolor Group. The Walter Brooks Memorial Fund was established by his friends at the Shore and Country Club. 

“Brushwork” continues through March 24 and admission is free. Winter hours for the RAC Gallery at 145 Rowayton Avenue are 12:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Master printer James Reed chose the award winners for acylic, oil and watercolor paintings from 85 entries submitted by 56 RAC exhibiting artists. Reed commented, “I didn’t know what to expect from this group show. There is a broad spectrum of work and I was surprised at the quality of so many paintings. The show exceeded my expectations.”

In addition to the winners, Connecticut artists in the exhibition are: Bridgeport – Judy Noel, Kaz Oda; Cheshire – Cynthia Mazzaferro; Cos Cob – Carolyn Lyngholm; Darien – Carol Conze, Linda George, Yuko Ike, Pam Lindberg, Madeleine Muller, Dana Monro; Fairfield – Janine Brown; Greenwich – James Ryan; New Canaan – Virginia Jennewein, Marianne Rothballer, Antoinette Vardamis, Suzanne Wright; Norwalk – Kathy Draper, Heide Follin, Belenda Ganser, Jessica Huse, Joan Manning, Lynn Stephens Massey, Bela Szabo; Ridgefield – Steffi Jones, Richard Koleszar; Rowayton – Michael Boll, Edith McClean, Tom Ranges, Eunice Roy; Stamford -- Susan Acker, Nancy Douglass, Pamela Riley-Abear; Weston – Barbara Bernstein; Westport – Sandra Aldrich, Joanne Davidson, Caroline Gantz, Wendy MacCordy, Rhoda Madan-Shotkin, Chery Ozar, Wendy Pieper, Dick Rauh; Wilton – Ruth Ipe, Betty Schneier, Jen Shelley. Artists from New York are Kendall Klingbeil and Wendy Moore of Pound Ridge and Robert Krouskoff of White Plains.

For more than 50 years the Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) has been a community cultural hub that provides a welcoming environment for regional artists to exhibit and sell their work, exchange arts-related ideas, and participate in classes and workshops for creative people of all ages and at all levels. The RAC Gallery and Art School are located on the banks of the scenic Five Mile River in Rowayton, CT.

Local artists win awards

Susan Spivack of Westport received the 24th annual Walter Brooks Memorial Award for her Watercolor 1st place painting, “Repose,” during the opening reception for “Brushwork” at the Rowayton Arts Center. Carol C. Young of Fairfield was awarded 1st place for her acrylic painting titled “Abandoned Sheds.”
